The Strang Ranch is a family owned and run business. It is a working cattle ranch and a sport horse breeding operation as well as a busy equestrian center, hosting many hunter/jumper and dressage shows, clinics and daily lessons.

The ranch lies on 460 Acres of irrigated and pasture land in Western Colorado with outstanding views of the Elk Mountain Range, 25 miles from the Aspen Airport.

There is extensive trail riding, a recognized fox hunt, and an extensive hunter/jumper training barn.

Strang Ranch to Host the 2011 National Sheep dog finals

Strang Ranch is pleased to announce that the 2011 national sheep dog finals will be run at Strang Ranch September 13-18 2011.
This six day event will include a food and craft fair as well as competition for 225 pre-qualified dog and handler teams. Only the best teams from the U.S. and Canada make the cut to compete for over $40,000 in purse money and the title(s) of 2011 National Sheepdog Champion and the 2011 National Nursery Champion (younger dogs). Seven hundred of Colorado’s notorious range yearlings (sheep) will be gathered from high alpine meadows of the Rocky Mountains and delivered to Strang Ranch the day before the trial. These sheep will levy the necessary challenge to determine 2011 champions. The sport of sheepdog trialing is growing in popularity in the United States, and particularly in the Rocky Mountain Region. Just 80 miles away, the ever-popular Meeker Classic is held annually the week after Labor Day, and it will wind up just two days before the 2011 National Finals begins. The close proximity of the Meeker Classic and the timing will only build excitement and enthusiasm for the 2011 National Sheepdog Finals. The legendary Meeker Classic is a shining example of the impact a large sheepdog trial can have on a community.

Aspen Valley Land Trust, a non-profit 501 (C)(3), will be the beneficiary of profits from the 2011 National Sheepdog Finals held at Strang Ranch in Carbondale, Colorado. AVLT is Colorado’s oldest land trust (founded in 1967) and is committed to conserving ranchland and open spaces in the Roaring Fork and Colorado River valleys.
Strang Ranch and the Strang family have had a long relationship with AVLT. The ranch is conserved through a conservation easement designed to protect the agricultural productiveness of the property. Kit Strang and Lathrop Strang (deceased) both served on the AVLT Board of Directors for several years and AVLT’s major fund-raising event, the Save the Land Dance, was held at the Strang Ranch annually from 2003 to 2008.
The Strang Ranch family and management exemplify good land stewardship and exceptional community service.
AVLT has conserved more than 31,000 acres in the central Colorado mountains and continues to work with landowners to conserve the important ranchlands, habitat and scenic open spaces that are vital to the region’s tourism industry, local food production and Western ranching heritage. AVLT is nationally accredited by the Land Trust Alliance Commission and certified by the State of Colorado.

Lathrop Strang Memorial Fund

There are no words to describe the life you lived - you were amazing in every aspect of your life. We love you Lados.

On a perfect Colorado spring day in 2008, a perilous run down a chute atop Mount Sopris took the life of Lathrop Strang. His death shocked and saddened the valley and a void lingers where his intellect and energy contributed so much.

Lathrop served on the board of Aspen Valley Land Trust for six years, and before that was a member to the board of Western Colorado Agricultural Heritage Fund, which merged with AVLT in 2002. Land conservation, particularly that of working ranches, was Lathrop’s passion. He felt strongly that humans as well as animals need open spaces and land to grow food and fuel.

Lathrop’s parents Mike and Kit, brother Scott and sisters Laurie and Bridget, asked that in lieu of flowers, people make a donation to a selected non-profits, including AVLT. The Lathrop Strang Memorial Fund helps defray some of the costs landowners incur in donation a conservation easement. The funds are used to conserve working ranches that have been in one family for at least 25 years. Lathrop is no longer here to advocate for ranchers and ranching, but he continues to help insure that ranching remains in the Roaring Fork and Colorado River valleys.

Judge: Ellen Skillings Sheep will be fresh from the range and the course will be over mowed, irrigated hay meadows.
Classes Offered: Open -$75/10$ add back from each entry to purse plus added money-depending on number of entries, third Open is 50$, Open Ranch - $60/10$ add back Nursery -40$-no pay back in Nursery Entries will not be limited to two dogs per handler per class. Dogs may be run in both Nursery and OR with two entry fees. Please specify. Entries accepted as received beginning July 1. Checks cashed Sep. 1- no refunds unless I fill your spot.

Strang ranch is located at 7000 feet in the hills above the beautiful Roaring fork Valley. We are 10 – 20 Minutes from the towns of Carbondale, Basalt, and Glenwood Springs, and 30 minutes from Aspen. The Valley is host to world class restaurants, fantastic hiking, biking, and rafting, though I suspect October is not the time for that. We hope you will come and enjoy this wonderful valley.
Please join us for dinner on Saturday night at the ranch house. Bring your friends, just let us know you are coming and how many will be with you. Bring a chair, and your beverage of choice and meet on the lawn in front of the main house. The weather in October can be amazing. We could be very warm in the depths of Indian summer, and wake up with a hard frost in the morning. Wet and cold are not unheard of, but I have ordered bountiful sun, and begged for the snow to stay in the mountains until Tuesday after the trial.

Philip Champion both Weeks at Tucson Fall shows!!!

Philip, a 2003 geld by Circa Z was champion in the Derby Jumpers both weeks of the Tucson fall horse shows held at the Pima County Fairgrounds. Philip who has been showing in a few 1.2M classes this summer proved he was ready to go a little faster, and turn a little sharper. Look for him to start jumping a bit higher and running a bit faster in Thermal. Philip is by Circa Z who is still competing as a 18 yr old with Sophie Simpson in the irons. After several years in the international ring with Nicole Simpson, he is back in the family showing Sophie how it is done, winning several big classes in California. Philip is priced at 60,000$.

First Annual Sheep Dog Trails at Strang Ranch a HUGE SUCCESS

The sheep dog trials held the weekend of October 16-18 was perfect!!! Thank you to our sponsers, Stranahan Wiskey, Propain services and the Devan family, the Nunes Family, Dawn and Skylar Rossi, Heather Dresser, Paradice Farm and the Dixons, R J Paddywaks and Kathy Weiss Stevenson. WE had the most amazing weather, the sheep were wonderful, and the dogs worked well. Amelia Smith, from Valley Center California was our judge, and did a marvelous job sorting out the winners from the open classes, and helping out the novice handlers and dogs. Who knew we could run a novice dog trial on the same field as the opens, and have success!!? Jim Swift with Zac and Melinda Brenimer and her dog Finn were the winners of the Open classes. Corey Anderson with Leksi and Maury Harris with Glen were the winners of the Open Ranch classes. The Pro-Novice was won by Diana Rollings with Larken and Bridget Strang with Rose. The winners of the Juniors and Novice classes were Deb Terry with Peg, and Corey Anderson with Skip.

First of all, I would like thank everyone for coming to our horse shows this summer and making them fun and wonderful!! To those of you who RAN our April Horse Show a special thank you!!! And to everyone who makes our shows happen all summer long, thank you to for helping in the office, announcing, running the gate, picking up rails, timing, moving jumps, collecting trash and all the extra things you do.
It has been almost a year since you have heard from the Strang Gang and a lot has happened!!! California for the winter is definitely still on the schedule. Riding in the sun and sand in tee shirts in January just seems like the right thing to do!! Last year we had a very successful horse show circuit in Thermal and at The Oaks in San Juan Capistrano and can’t wait to get out there for this year. After our adventures in Denver at the stock show with Max and Mikes’ Lowline cattle and Bridget’s Border Collies, we will head west with thirteen horses for the winter. They will live at Laurie and Scott’s Tahquitz Equestrian Center in huge stalls and green grass turnouts. The new and improved horse show in Thermal is only ten minutes from the farm and a great place to train young horses as well as compete against the best.
There are many new faces around the barn. We had a terrific group of young kids in the lesson program this summer, and we look forward to their return. And we have many new boarder and clients. Welcome to all. We are thrilled you have come to the ranch, and look forward to the future.
We are fortunate to have wonderful help from Octovio Marquez, Hugh Coleby, Cody Weverstadt, Sylvia Johnson, and our wonderful working students Emily Alverez and Lilly Thorson.. They all contribute to the smooth operation in the barn from keeping the horses fed and healthy to training and teaching.
We welcomed Greg Best here in June and had a wonderful clinic. We hope Greg will be back this summer as well. Maria Wasson returned to the ranch to work her flat work magic every month. We look forward to seeing her in California this winter and back at the ranch in the summer. We also are very excited to have Greg Eliel back on the clinic schedule. Greg, was a student of Buck Branaman’s and is a wonderful teacher of Natural Horsemanship, addressing both the riders position and the horses mind. The horses are all excited he will be returning to add some clarity in their lives. Please contact us if you are interested in attending any of these clinics.
The Strang Gang attended a few “A” horse shows at the Colorado Horse Park, Estes Park and in Tucson. Estes Park was was amazing! Notable: Freckles and Leah Scholl, Champion in the Short Stirrup, Sue Pietrzak’s “Quiet Time” Champion in the Level 4 jumpers and Betty Anne Shenk’s “Duncan” Champion in the Green Conformation Hunters with Bridget. “Don’t Tell Daddy” was Reserve Champion in the Medium Pony Hunters with Courtnay Edwards. And finally, Gail and Bridget rode in the rotating riders relay class dressed as “the winners” and WON! The whole gang was amazing, and we had a ball!
Congratulations to every one for their achievements all year whether recognized with ribbons and trophies or not.
In the fall we ventured to High Prairie for a windy horse trial where Courtnay and Bell picked up a great ribbon. Then on to Tucson in the late fall to hold off winter for another couple weeks. Congratulations to Carolyn Devan and “Molly” for their Reserve Championship in the Pony Hunters and to Laura Pietrzak for her fabulous round in the classic!!! Betty Anne’s horse, Duncan, was champion again in his division and had the highest score in the Hunter Derby. Congratulations to all. < In September, We welcomed "Treat" into our lives, to help Rosie keep the sheep in order. He is a wonderful addition, thankyou Norm and Vicky CLose of Handhills Border Collies, for this wonderful dog!
2008 brought some perspective to all our lives. We honored Michelle Marlow’s wonderful horse, “Guizmo” who suffered an untimely death. We thank and appreciate so many friends who have helped us through this year and Lathrop’s devastating accident as we strive to keep his legacy alive. The Strang Gang.

“Phillip” is a 16.1 h Selle Francais gelding, out of Liberty’s Diamond (Procurer/Farn/Inshalla) a wonderful dutch mare and is by the legendary Circe De Blondel “Circa Z”. As a four year old he did one event and won the Young Event horse section for the four and five year olds. He has shown as a five yr old in the young Jumper classes in California and Colorado. Last season he did a few 1.2m classes, winning the Future Jumper Stake in Tucson Arizona, and getting good ribbons in the 1.20m jumpers in Thermal. In 2010 he got very good consistant ribbons in the 1.20m jumpers in Thermal and moved up to the 1.30m jumpers at High Prairie in the spring.
